American Jewish activists have long been at the forefront of major social change efforts. Dr. Elaine Leeder will examine the dramatic history of Jewish activism in the twentieth century by focusing on labor movement leaders Rose Schneiderman and Rose Pesotta; mid-century organizers Sam Dolgoff and Saul Alinsky; 1960s anti-war activists Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin; and Jewish women of the feminist movement, including Betty Friedan and Bella Abzug.
Elaine Leeder is a Professor Emerita of Sociology and the Dean Emerita of the School of Social Sciences at Sonoma State University, with a career in academia and public service spanning more than fifty years. She is the author of seven books, including Inside and Out: Women, Prison, and Therapy; The Family in Global Perspective; Treating Abuse in Families: A Feminist and Community Approach; and The Gentle General: Rose Pesotta, Anarchist and Labor Organizer.
