Delphine Horvilleur: Living with Our Dead: On Loss and Consolation

(Memoir, 160 pp. 2024)

French rabbi Delphine Horvilleur’s very approachable stories about her own experiences sharing individuals’ loss and mourning, venture from sincere compassion to the pragmatics of preparing herself and others to face death, burial, and open-ended grief. The book won France’s 2021 Babelio Prize for nonfiction. Sensitive and true, the stories offer beautiful insights into the extraordinariness of real people’s normal lives at their most vulnerable moments.
