(Fiction, 312pp., 2024)
Nourished from a young age by her literary mother’s nostalgia for the Bay Area’s 1960s progressive lifestyle, Elena dreams of leaving New England to experience California idealism for herself. Right out of college, she enlists in Teach for America to bring great literature to Berkeley’s disadvantaged children, but struggles to instill a love of poetry in her students. As Elena’s disillusionment deepens, the Bay Area’s start-up culture of the new millennium offers her an unexpected path forward.
