SUMMARY:Drop-In Book Discussion: The Loves of Judith by Meir Shalev, Facilitated by Jim Van Buskirk
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nJoin us for a lively in-person discussion at the Jewish Community Library. The Library is located at 1835 Ellis Street in San Francisco, with free garage parking ( https://goo.gl/maps/h11asWbpMhssBkMq6 ) on Pierce between Ellis and Eddy. \nTo register, click here. You may borrow a copy of The Loves of Judith at no charge by contacting us at info@jewishcommunitylibrary.org ( mailto:info@jewishcommunitylibrary.org ). \nAbout the book:\n\n\n\nWhen the mysterious Judith arrives in a small agricultural village in Palestine in the 1930s, she attracts attention of three men: Moshe, a widowed farmer; Globerman, a wealthy cattle dealer; and Jacob, who loses his wife—the most beautiful woman in the village—because of his obsession with Judith, who insists on living in a cowshed rather than settling down with any of her admirers. When she gives birth to Zayde, all three suitors consider him their son, and Zayde, who tragically loses Judith, imbibes their triple wisdom and their distinct versions of his origins. As Zayde pieces together the beguiling story of the singular woman who was his mother, Meir Shalev weaves a magical novel of the joys and secrets of village life, of an unconventional family, and the unexpected fruits of love.\nAbout the facilitator:\n\n\n\nJim Van Buskirk is a retired librarian (San Francisco Public Library, Jewish Community Library) who currently works as a book group facilitator, writer, editor, public speaker, exhibit curator, and collections manager. He frequently writes articles and/or presents programs related to Jewish, literary, film, and/or queer history.\n\n\n\n\n
