SUMMARY:Songs of Sukkot with the Jewish Music Collective
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nPlease register to attend this free in-person program. The Library is located at 1835 Ellis Street in San Francisco, with free garage parking ( https://goo.gl/maps/h11asWbpMhssBkMq6 ) at 1227 Pierce Street between Ellis and Eddy.  \nThe Jewish Music Collective will celebrate Sukkot with an eclectic program of klezmer, Yiddish, Ladino, Israeli, jazz, folk, musical theatre, and contemporary music. Inspired by a season of gathering, gratitude, and connection, this concert highlights the richness and diversity of Jewish musical expression across cultures, generations, and traditions.\nThe Jewish Music Collective is a passionate group of musicians dedicated to celebrating the full range of Jewish musical expression. From classical to klezmer, jazz to Mizrahi, they bring together sounds from across time and place — all rooted in Jewish spirit and joy.\nThe Musicians:\nLeora Gilgur is a Bay Area–based classical and jazz vocalist and co‑founder of the Jewish Music Collective. Passionate about sharing the richness and emotional power of Jewish music, she brings performance, education, and community connection together in every moment. Leora maintains a successful private voice studio, leading a future generation of passionate singers. She graduated summa cum laude with her Master’s Degree of Music in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.\nAlexander Malinas is a composer and multi‑instrumentalist—primarily at home at the piano, but proficiently skilled at flute, tambourine, and accordion—and co‑founder of the Jewish Music Collective. He made history as the youngest-ever winner of the Highsmith Orchestra Composition Competition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, standing out for his exceptional orchestral voice and imaginative approach.Passionate about blending tradition and innovation, Alexander curates immersive musical experiences that reflect the full vibrancy of Jewish musical expression.\nBen Klausner is an Oakland-based musician, sound engineer, and gardener. Besides playing guitar in a local punk band, Plaster, his musical interests include going to klezmer jams, singing Georgian vocal music, and studying classical guitar as a solo practice. When not musicking, he enjoys studying Yiddish, building community, and categorizing aspects of his life in sets of three.\nAsaf Ophir began his professional career in Israeli musicals, playing woodwinds in some of the most distinguished theaters in his home country. Having moved to the United States in 2014, Ophir performs throughout the Bay Area in many Jewish, Middle Eastern, and Balkan productions, as well as classical and jazz. Throughout his career he has shared the stage with artists such as Miri Mesika, Avi Kushnir, Rana Farhan, Ustad Mahwash, and Barbra Streisand. The San Francisco Chronicle writes: “Asaf Ophir gives the clarinet the timbre of a trumpet, then a violin, then a raspy scream… the instrument’s wail almost becomes too plaintive and beautiful to bear.”\nChristopher-Lawson Palmer is a student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music majoring in Jazz Studies and Classical Voice. He has expanded his knowledge of Jazz repertoire, music theory, composition, and the art of improvisation while studying at Juilliard, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, UNT, UT of Knoxville, Rutgers University, and Interlochen Arts Camp. He has had the pleasure of performing both domestically and internationally with the New Orleans Jazz Youth Orchestra, Greater Dallas Jazz Youth Orchestra, Dallas Jazz Piano Society, Knoxville Youth Jazz Orchestra, Greater Dallas Youth Jazz Combo, and Keller Area Youth Jazz Orchestra. He has also worked and toured with the Knoxville Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Opera Créole, as well as Opera Lafayette. \nAlexis Tsamoudakis is an upright and electric bassist pursuing a degree in Jazz studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She spent most ofher teens performing with bands of different genres, including jazz, metal, classical, and rock, and studied with some of the Bay Area’s greatest musicians, including Howard Wiley, the Athayde family, and Isaac Coyle. Alexis has had the privilege of performing at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, and the Toyota Pavilion in Concord.
