DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nClick here to register for this free virtual program made possible by the support of the Workers Circle / Arbeter Ring of Northern California and co-presented by the Jewish Folk Chorus of San Francisco, Klezcalifornia and New Lehrhaus.\n\nThe history of San Francisco Jewry tends to be told in terms dominated by the experience of Jews from German-speaking lands who settled in California in the mid-nineteenth century with great success. Less attention is given to the lives of Jews from Eastern Europe who began arriving in significant numbers at the end of the nineteenth century. This presentation will focus on these immigrants through the prism of Yiddish language and culture, with a focus on the artistic and political life of the community.\nHoward Freedman has served since 2009 as Director of the Jewish Community Library in San Francisco. A longtime educator, he has taught in a wide variety of settings. He has written the Off the Shelf column on books in J. The Jewish News of Northern California since 2012.\nProgram made possible, in part, by Emily Brewer in honor and memory of her father, Dr. Richard Brewer, and by Richard Krieg, in honor of David Medlin.\n\n\n\n\n
